Police in the state of North Carolina finished their investigation of a fatal car accident that happened last September. Based on the evidence found at the scene and eyewitness testimony, officers were able to place a young man under arrest for driving under the influence (DUI). While intoxicated by alcohol, the 27-year-old chose to drive and caused a collision that killed his best friend. Although police knew that the young man was involved in the death, they needed to conduct a full investigation before formally charging him.
Following their investigation, officers charged the 27-year-old with DUI with property damage, DUI with personal injury, DUI with serious bodily injury and DUI manslaughter. The victim was a 25-year-old male that was riding in the backseat of the vehicle at the time of the crash. Police reported that here were also two more passengers in the car that sustained injuries.
In North Carolina, a conviction for DUI manslaughter can result in more than monetary fines and community service - it can actually lead to years of jail time.
